My dad’s better than your dad
February 19th, 2008 Jason
All right, admit it. who tuned in to see the most recent abomination that is reality tv? For those of you with lives or no access to television, “My Dad is Better than your Dad” is the latest and greatest sign that we have lost our grip on reality. Double Dare meets American Gladiators (old school) meets Maury Povich. Compete to see who wins their child’s love and admiration.
I gotta admit, the show struck a chord when they had the dads bust apart a big wooden desk with a sledge hammer. I give kudos to any show that can incorporate sledge hammers into their storyline.
While I was watching I tried to imagine my dad competing in this contest. It was tough shutting out images of spandex and a crazy-eyed Maroney with a sledge hammer, but I realized my dad didn’t need to go on a show like that. he lived it out every day (and continues to now as grandpa “pots”). Coaching my sports teams, being involved in church, helping me with my homework, disciplining me (i still have marks) and being there for me 24/7. He was by no means perfect, but He pointed me, through his actions, to a Father that is perfect.
Whether it is parents to our children, or sons and daughters to our parents, we have a calling: to represent the love of our Heavenly Father through our everyday thoughts, words and actions.
